Tradition of gambling in Germany

For many players, roulette is the absolute supreme discipline among casino games. This can be observed not only in land-based casinos, but also in the numerous reputable online casinos and, recently, in the popular live casinos. Almost every child knows that this table game originated in France. The same applies to blackjack. However, opinions differ as to the origins. Some believe it comes from Italy, others swear by it that our French neighbors were the first to distribute the cards. Officially, Black Jack is in any case a “descendant” of the French Vingt, or as a special category of the German Seventeen and Four. Black Jack and Roulette are among the most popular casino table games of all. Gamblers who love to travel are drawn to Monte Carlo or to distant Las Vegas to really live out their play instinct. Those who prefer to be more comfortable or who simply do not have the time to travel far swear by the increasingly popular online gambling that can be enjoyed on the sofa at home. But if you are looking for an occasional change from online gambling, you are often faced with the question: Where are the best casinos in Germany? We asked around and here we present one that is one of the most traditional establishments in Germany.

Gambling with tradition

Anyone who thinks that Germany cannot keep up with the major international gambling destinations is very wrong. Just a few kilometers from Frankfurt am Main, for example, is the location of the casino Bad Homburg vor der Höhe. A traditional casino that proudly looks back on more than 170 years of history. It was opened in 1841 and is now promoting itself as the “mother of Monte Carlo”. That there is also a reason for this title cannot be denied. For example, you play French roulette in the Monaco metropolis. That means: there is only one zero. Bad Homburg is said to have originated this rule – at least in part. Right from the start, the twin brothers Francois and Louis Blanc, who were the operators of the casino in the illustrious Hessian health resort, refrained from playing with a double zero, as is the norm in American roulette. Nowadays you can often find both versions in modern casinos. The popular online casino Karamba, for example, has both variants of online roulette. A professional customer service is available to anyone who has any questions and is available seven days a week from 8 a.m. to midnight. In Bad Homburg vor der Höhe, however, the long-established French rule is strictly adhered to. True to the motto: What is played in Monte Carlo remains perfect for Bad Homburg. After all, the Bad Homburg casino is one of the oldest and most famous casinos in Europe and one of the top 5 in Germany.

First Bad Homburg, then Monte Carlo

After Francois Blanc founded a casino in the popular spa town of Bad Homburg vor der Höhe, he moved on to Monte Carlo in 1863 to set up a casino there too. Success was certain to him. The casino in Monte Carlo has since been one of the most fashionable and legendary casinos in the world. The reason for his move to Monaco lay in the changed German laws, which severely restricted gaming operations and generally forbade citizens to gamble. The casino had to close, was able to reopen a few years later, only to be closed again shortly afterwards. This ups and downs lasted until 1949. The Bad Homburg casino only celebrated its grand reopening on April 7th of the same year and has been an integral part of the spa park ever since.

Meanwhile, numerous slot machines adorn the halls and the so-called big games take place at the tables. The place, which is so closely linked to the tradition of European roulette, still offers to bet on black, red, odd and even today.

Of course, Bad Homburg vor der Höhe is not the only spa town in Germany that also has a casino. There are also a few seaside resorts on the North and Baltic Seas and not to forget: Baden-Baden. But the casinos in Bad Ems, Bad Dürkheim and Bad Neuenahr also look back on a history rich in tradition. It goes without saying that it is no coincidence that so many long-established casinos have opened up in spas. It should not be forgotten that running therapeutic baths was and is associated with a number of costs that a small town could not easily raise, and certainly not without outside help. The city fathers were therefore very welcome to receive additional income from the gambling taxes. In addition, the casinos were an additional attraction at the site, which provided attractive afternoon or evening entertainment.

All over Germany casinos have a long tradition and it can be assumed that this tradition will not die out anytime soon.
